Perfect Skype setup: Step four – add a subscription (it costs only $3 per month in the US, available in other counties as well)

By Vitaly Dubravin

Skype subscriptions are the cheapest way to make frequent calls in the single country or region. Go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/prices/pay-monthly/ and get one.

Skype Subscription

Though subscription terms may vary from country to country, many features remain common. There are several advantages in having one instead of having to pay as you go (you may have both, by the way):

  • It is very inexpensive – only $3 (for US and Canada subscription)
  • Covers all calls to all phone numbers (landlines and cell phone) in both countries. Other subscriptions may only cover the landline, so it is always a good idea to have a description – it is a paragraph, not a page of text in Skype.
  • Call forwarding is free as well ( see step 7 below)

Skype subscriptions will also give you a voicemail (step 5) and Skype ToGo number (step 9) for no extra charge. There are no fees for long distance calls. New York, NY to San Francisco, CA or Stamford, CT to Greenwich, CT are both covered by the flat rate $3 monthly subscription.

Call quality is a good as the phone call quality you’re used to. Traditional phone service was built several decades ago and has not changed much since.  Don’t expect any miracle from Skype. If you call to a noisy analog phone line, it will be noisy as it was before. Calls to modern digital lines will remain crystal clear.
