Perfect Skype setup: Step two – install Skype and test it (FREE)

By Vitaly Dubravin

You have to have Skype client somewhere to use it with your account. There are clients for almost all imaginable devices – from a laptop to a cell phone and even TV set. I’ll not be surprised if a fridge or a microwave version will come out soon. But your computer (Windows or Mac) is always a good starting point.

Default installation works fine, though I always disable Skype integration with all Internet browsers (like Internet Explorer or Firefox). It adds a tiny Skype button to every phone number on the page. Skype will dial this number automatically when you click on it. Very convenient feature, but it changes the original look of the site. And I don’t like this – just my personal preference. You may love it.

It is possible to install Skype with the same Skype Name on multiple devices (like home and office computer, cell phone, etc.). You will see you chat on ALL devices and if the voice or video call comes in, then you can answer it on ANY connected device.  There is no need to “forward” calls from your office to your cell at the end of the day like you used to. It just rings everywhere it can.

It is always a good idea to test your installation on every new device – just to make sure you can hear people and they can hear you. Skype has a robot that can take a call; it records your “speech” and then plays it back to you. Go to the Call Phones tab in your Skype client and dial “echo123”. Voice prompt will guide you through the rest of the process.

You may test your webcam setup as well using a similar video test robot. Call “videoecho123” instead. Skype supports a wide variety of webcams and you may have a video call with HDTV quality for as long as you have a fast computer, HDTV webcam and good (really good) Internet connection. Wi-Fi may limit your video to YouTube default quality. This is good enough anyway.

Now you are ready for your first Skype-to-Skype call.  Add your friends to Skype next.
